Heat wave comin' off the blacktop slow
Heat wave, the windshield starts to glow
Heat wave, I see Mara in the haze
Heat wave, the highway never strays
Slow
Slow
The radio's been playin' since Tucumcari
A Mexican love song, an old salt tear
The gasoline and orange peel perfume
Of a summer that's about to leave the room
A hitchhiker in Phoenix held a sign that said "Mariana"
I almost stopped, but the wind was on a different arena
And the lines on the highway start to bend
And the distance calls a long-lost friend
And the only thing I want to spend
Heat wave comin' off the blacktop slow
Heat wave, the windshield starts to glow
Heat wave, I see Mara in the haze
Heat wave, the highway never strays
Highway
Slow
I pulled into a diner, the waitress knew my face
She said, "Honey, you been here in another place"
The coffee was a rumor, the jukebox played a lie
The clock said 1956, the year my mother said goodbye
She said, "The man you marry is the man that you become"
She said, "The road you take is the road that takes you some"
You can't outrun a heat wave, it follows like a hound
But every now and then it sets you down
And in the silence you can hear a sound
That sounds a lot like someone turning around
Turning around, Mara, turning around
Heat wave comin' off the blacktop slow
Heat wave, the windshield starts to glow
Heat wave, I see Mara in the haze
Heat wave, the highway never strays
