The porch light knows my whole name
Better than the road ever will
I'm folding the map my grandmother drew
Into a coal that won't sit still

Every window in this house
Has watched somebody leave before
I'm not the first to touch this latch
I won't be the last to shut this door

Kindle it, carry it, don't let it drown
This ember's older than this town
Kindle it, carry it, wherever I land
It still remembers whose hand

Grandma said the fire don't ask where you're going
It just asks if your hands are cupped right
I've got three coins and one coal glowing
And a whole county at my back tonight

Kindle it, carry it, don't let it drown
This ember's older than this town
Kindle it, carry it, wherever I land
It still remembers whose hand
